When it comes to snack foods, nothing beats good ol’ Chex Mix. It’s salty, crunchy, savory and just so dang addicting. Add a Diet Coke to the lineup and someone get me my spandex pants because in the words of Miley Cyrus,”I can’t stop, and I won’t stop.”

This recipe for Homemade Chex Mix just. changed. everything.

When it comes to making this snack from scratch, there are two ways to go about it: toss it into a slow cooker or bake it in the oven.

I’ve provided instructions for both methods, but I have a very clear favorite…

If crunchy is your goal, then the oven is your friend! I’ve made this recipe both ways, and while the slow cooker is convenient, it just doesn’t result in the characteristic crunch that Chex Mix should have.

Key Ingredients

A stick of butter next to various sizes of clear bowls containing Cheerios, walnuts, paprika, Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, Chex cereal, pretzels, peanuts and garlic powder.

Traditional Chex Mix typically includes a combination of Chex cereals, pretzels, nuts and a savory seasoning blend. Feel free to add your favorite snacks like bagel chips, cheese crackers, Bugles or even chocolate chips for a sweet and savory twist!

For the Party Mix

  • Chex cereal: I love using a combination of Corn Chex and Rice Chex, but any variety will work. I recommend using at least two of your favorite varieties for added flavor and textures.
  • Cheerios cereal: Whole grain Cheerios are my go-to for a wholesome addition. The nutty undertones add a delightful contrast to the other ingredients. If you’re feeling adventurous, try honey-nut Cheerios for a touch of sweetness.
  • Pretzels: I like to mix things up with pretzels of different shapes and sizes. Pretzel sticks bring a satisfying crunch, while twisted pretzels offer a classic touch.
  • Nuts: I’ve opted for walnuts and peanuts, but any nut will work so choose your favorites. When selecting peanuts, go for the roasted, unsalted variety. They contribute a robust flavor without overpowering the mix with excessive salt.

No matter which cereals and mix-ins you go for, just make sure to keep the total volume of snacks consistent. This ensures you’ll have enough seasoning mixture to evenly coat everything. Follow my formula for homemade Chex Mix success:

10 cups cereal + 2 cups nuts + 2 cups mix-ins (pretzels, crackers, wasabi peas, etc).

For the Seasoning Blend

  • Unsalted butter: I always choose high-quality, unsalted butter. It allows me to have precise control over the salt content in the mix. The richness of good butter is key to elevating the entire snacking experience.
  • Smoked paprika: I’m a fan of a smoky kick, so I tend to go a bit heavy on the smoked paprika. Adjust to your liking, but don’t be afraid to let the smokiness shine through – it adds a layer of complexity.
  • Garlic powder: Provides a savory and aromatic essence.
  • Lawry’s Seasoned Salt: Lawry’s is a staple, but if you’re in a pinch, try making your own seasoned salt blend. Mix together 2 teaspoons salt with ½ teaspoon pepper, paprika and onion powder, plus a pinch of sugar.
  • Worcestershire sauce: A generous amount provides a savory depth and umami.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Kelly’s Note: If allergies are a concern, choose nut-free or gluten-free options to ensure everyone can enjoy this delicious snack. There are plenty of nut alternatives, such as seeds (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds) or additional mix-ins.

How to Make Homemade Chex Mix

If you want that classic Chex Mix crunch that we all love, oven baking is the way to go. It ensures that your mix is dehydrated evenly and thoroughly, giving you a consistent crunch throughout. Plus, this method usually results in a bolder flavor.

Making Chex Mix using the slow cooker method is super easy and convenient. All you need to do is add the ingredients and let the slow cooker do its magic. This method cooks the mix at lower temperatures for a longer time, which makes the mix chewier instead of crispy, unlike the oven method.

  1. Mix the dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine Chex cereal, Cheerios, pretzels, walnuts and peanuts.
  2. Make the sauce. In a small saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, Worcestershire sauce and pepper.
A hand holding a whisk mixes a seasoned sauce in a small saucepan.
  1. Combine the sauce with the dry party mix. Pour the sauce over the dry ingredients, making sure to coat everything evenly. Stir gently to avoid breaking the cereal.

  1. Choose your cooking method:
    • Oven-baked (my personal preference!): Preheat the oven 250°F. Transfer the party mix onto two baking sheets, spreading it into an even layer. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
    • Slow cooker: Transfer the mixture into a slow cooker and turn it to LOW. Cover the slow cooker and cook the mixture for 3 hours, removing the lid every 45 minutes to gently stir the mixture.
    • Microwave: Using a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 5-6 minutes, making sure to stir every 2 minutes for even coating. Once done, transfer the mixture to a baking sheet, let it cool, and then it’s ready to be served.
  2. Whichever method you choose, just be sure to let it cool completely before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together, and it will achieve the perfect texture.

Recipe Tips

  • Stir While Baking: During the baking process, stir the mix every 15 minutes to ensure even coating and prevent it from burning.
  • Let it Cool Completely: Allow the Chex Mix to cool completely before storing. This helps maintain its crispiness and prevents condensation in the storage container.
  • Make it Your Own!: Customize your party mix by incorporating your favorite cereals, crackers, nuts and seasonings. Add a pinch of cayenne for heat or try a dash of your favorite hot sauce for an extra kick. You can even elevate the savory profile by including dried herbs like thyme, rosemary or oregano.

Storage Tips

To preserve the crunch and flavor of your homemade Chex party mix, store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Periodically check for any signs of moisture inside the container, and if present, leave the lid slightly ajar briefly to allow excess moisture to escape.

Recipe FAQs

Why is my homemade Chex Mix soggy?

If your homemade Chex Mix is turning out soggy, it might be because it didn’t cool completely before storage. Using too much liquid, especially if you alter the amounts of butter or Worcestershire sauce, can contribute to sogginess, too. To prevent excess moisture, consider placing a paper towel under the lid when storing the mix.

How do I prevent it from becoming too salty?

You can control the saltiness by adjusting the seasoned salt blend to your taste. I also recommend using unsalted nuts.

What are creative mix-in ideas?

Elevate your Chex Mix with creative mix-ins like dried cranberries, M&Ms, spicy nuts, Goldfish crackers, wasabi peas, popcorn, dill pickle chips, Italian herb-infused crackers and oyster crackers. Feel free to experiment to discover your favorite combination!

My family is gluten free, so I adjusted for our diet. It was soo good! I used honey nut cheerios to add a sweet against the salty and gluten free cheese crackers. I also left out the walnuts because we aren’t big fans, but we LOVE this recipe! And I love that it made so much for a low price

Are you sure recipe should be Teaspoons of spices instead of Tablespoons. All the other recipes call for various teaspoon amounts?

  3. This recipe for Chex mix is one of the things that can be made in the microwave and the consistency is not changed at all. Place in a microwave-safe bowl and stir every 2 minutes. Keep an eye on it because it will burn and do less than 2 minutes per stirring.

I have been making Chex mix since I was 8 years old, it was the first thing I learned to cook. Surprisingly my mother let me do the whole thing myself and I did not burn the house down or anything else.

Being as I am a chex mix expert, I attest that making it in the microwave will work.

Recipe and directions were well organized and easy to follow, but it uses about twice as much seasoning as the original recipes. Too strong and too garlicky for my taste.

    1. Hi Briar – I’ve never experienced that issue before with this recipe. Was your oven at the correct temp? And, did you stir it every 15 minutes while it was baking?

This is it! Thank you so much for bringing back the flavor part mix had when I was a kid and the adults made it for parties.
    Just what the holidays ordered.

    1. I grew up with a very old fashioned farm girl Mother that made everything from scratch! She used Summer Savory, smoked salt, Marjoram, Beau Monde, Garlic, and onion powder, and a little cayenne pepper. Slivered stick butter over the top and used a 1/3rd of the seasoning and repeated it twice on 250 degrees…….yum yum addicting

I love this recipe-I’ve made it several times now..and it’s fun, flavorful & delicious! Mine burned the first time so I stir it every 15 minutes and leave it in the oven for 45 mins instead of an hour.

I tried this recipe yesterday but only made 1/2 the recipe because a lady here said that hers burnt. It might have been the type of cereal she used. It is difficult to find Chex around here so I used Life Whole Grain cereal (looks like Chex) and it worked well with this recipe.
The day before I had used Shreddies High Fibre in a similar recipe and the Shreddies became very dark and brittle. They were not burnt but sure looked burnt and was not a pleasing look in the recipe.
Thank you for the recipe, I will make it again.

Definitely wasn’t a fan of the paprika in the recipe, but as I had never made chex mix/nuts and bolts before, I was unsure of the spices that went into it. Was looking for a traditional flavour out of it, and was a bit let down. Ended up adding almost 2 more cups of cereal (I used crispix and cheerios) as the spice level looked crazy strong, and I’m glad I did, as it was still pretty strong. I used cheese goldfish and pretzels in this recipe, was happy with those choices. I can see how some people would like it, but the flavour profile wasn’t for me

Sounds like it will be delicious. I’m going to try this very soon! I make cereal
mixes often during the fall and winter months.

  11. Great Chex Mix!
I used salted butter and peanuts so I cut back on the Lawry’s.
I also added a little Chipotle Chili powder. Fabulous flavor.

      1. Mine did not come out very well. I followed the recipe directly, but it burnt. I don’t know what I did wrong .

      2. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the recipe, James. Did you bake the Chex Mix? If so, did you stir it every 15 minutes?

      3. Making a sweet version. Only using Chex and pretzels in the oven with cinnamon French toast “spices”. Will add mini mallows and tiny white chocolate chips when fully chilled. Fingers crossed!

  12. I’ve an old recipe from my Mother-in-law in 1955 she had been making for a few years. It calls for Chex, Cheerios, Kix, pretzels, and nuts, usually peanuts and cashews. Also Garlic salt, celery salt and savory salt along with butter and Worcestershire sauce. Over the years we started using all Chex cereals (Rice, Corn and Wheat) in place of Cheerios & Kix. All other ingredients the same, mostly. We haven’t been able to get the savory salt for several years but just used powdered savory, reducing the amount and sometimes mixed nuts. Then bake it for 2 hr. at 250. The recipe says it is the original Chex Mix recipe. My family and friends love it and I make several batches every year.

This is replacing my original recipe!! This has such an amazing punch of flavor! I was hesitant at the 1st stir cuz it was so soggy, but it really does crisp up perfectly after 1 hour. Gardettos garlic rye chips are a must though in our house in Chex mix, mmm. I added in a tish more Lawrys too after tasting halfway through…love my sodium Thanks for posting!!

Made it tonight, the aroma reminded me of Christmas. Very simple recipe. I did add some oyster crackers to it as well. Yummy

Very good chex mix, and great to have a different way of making it. I just mixed mine right in the bowl of my slow cooker, and that worked well. Use veggie Worcestershire sauce to make it vegetarian. Thanks for a great recipe!
