When it comes to snack foods, nothing beats good ol’ Chex Mix. It’s salty, crunchy, savory and just so dang addicting. Add a Diet Coke to the lineup and someone get me my spandex pants because in the words of Miley Cyrus,”I can’t stop, and I won’t stop.”

This recipe for Homemade Chex Mix just. changed. everything.

When it comes to making this snack from scratch, there’s two ways to go about it: toss it into a slow cooker or bake it in the oven.

I’ve provided instructions for both methods, but I have a very clear favorite…

If crunchy is your goal, then the oven is your friend! I’ve made this recipe both ways, and while the slow cooker is convenient, it just doesn’t result in the characteristic crunch that Chex Mix should have.

So choose your method then raid your pantry because this recipe is merely a template for you to sub in whatever cereals, pretzels and nuts you have on hand. Mix and match to your heart’s desire!

Homemade Chex Mix (Slow Cooker or Oven)

Whip up the ultimate crowd-friendly snack with this recipe for Homemade Chex Mix that can be made in a slow cooker or baked in an oven.

  • 8 cups Chex cereal
  • 2 cups Cheerios cereal
  • 2 cups pretzels
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1 cup roasted, unsalted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 2 Tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 2 Tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
  • 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper


  • Combine Chex cereal, Cheerios cereal, pretzels, walnuts and peanuts in a large bowl. 
  • In a small saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, Lawry’s Seasoned Salt, Worcestershire sauce and pepper. 
  • Pour the spice mix over the dry ingredients and toss to evenly coat. 

To cook in a slow cooker: 

  • Transfer the mixture into a slow cooker and turn it to LOW. Cover the slow cooker and cook the mixture for 3 hours, removing the lid every 45 minutes to gently stir the mixture. 
  • Transfer the mixture from the slow cooker onto a baking sheet. Let it cool completely then serve. 

To bake in an oven: 

  • Preheat the oven 250°F. 
  • Transfer the Chex Mix onto two baking sheets, spreading it into an even layer. 
  • Bake the Chex Mix for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Remove it from the oven and let it cool completely then serve. 


  • Homemade Chex Mix can be made up to 1 week in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

    Definitely wasn’t a fan of the paprika in the recipe, but as I had never made chex mix/nuts and bolts before, I was unsure of the spices that went into it. Was looking for a traditional flavour out of it, and was a bit let down. Ended up adding almost 2 more cups of cereal (I used crispix and cheerios) as the spice level looked crazy strong, and I’m glad I did, as it was still pretty strong. I used cheese goldfish and pretzels in this recipe, was happy with those choices. I can see how some people would like it, but the flavour profile wasn’t for me

    mixes often during the fall and winter months.

  4. Great Chex Mix!
    I used salted butter and peanuts so I cut back on the Lawry’s.
    I also added a little Chipotle Chili powder. Fabulous flavor.

  5. I’ve an old recipe from my Mother-in-law in 1955 she had been making for a few years. It calls for Chex, Cheerios, Kix, pretzels, and nuts, usually peanuts and cashews. Also Garlic salt, celery salt and savory salt along with butter and Worcestershire sauce. Over the years we started using all Chex cereals (Rice, Corn and Wheat) in place of Cheerios & Kix. All other ingredients the same, mostly. We haven’t been able to get the savory salt for several years but just used powdered savory, reducing the amount and sometimes mixed nuts. Then bake it for 2 hr. at 250. The recipe says it is the original Chex Mix recipe. My family and friends love it and I make several batches every year.

    This is replacing my original recipe!! This has such an amazing punch of flavor! I was hesitant at the 1st stir cuz it was so soggy, but it really does crisp up perfectly after 1 hour. Gardettos garlic rye chips are a must though in our house in Chex mix, mmm. I added in a tish more Lawrys too after tasting halfway through…love my sodium Thanks for posting!!

    Made it tonight, the aroma reminded me of Christmas. Very simple recipe. I did add some oyster crackers to it as well. Yummy

    Very good chex mix, and great to have a different way of making it. I just mixed mine right in the bowl of my slow cooker, and that worked well. Use veggie Worcestershire sauce to make it vegetarian. Thanks for a great recipe!
